Shore something up

支撑、提高、改善的意思。

在最近一篇政治評論談及美國總統特朗普在亞拉巴馬洲的報導,有提及:

Rather than kicking around the beleaguered establishment, Trump tried to shore it up.

意思即是特朗普嘗試支撑起來,為了不被閒置於一個混亂的局面。

因為若他不這樣做,會帶给他的總統領導地位一個嚴峻的考驗。

天鴿颱風帶來不少實質的破壞,有些歪倒的樹木或建築物需要用鐵或木柱支撑起來,我們會說:

The building has had to be shored up.

又或者有公司的形象被破壞了,公關經理需要改善。我們可以說:

The public relations manager has to shore up the company’s troubled image.

Shore something up 有其實質或意義上支撑的不同用法。
