Trail

Verb or Noun 動詞或名詞

Trail 用作名詞是指鄉間或林間的小道,一般是有特定用途而開發出來的,與path 有少許的差别在此。

Trail 又可解作某些動物或物件經過而留下的痕跡,例如: The dogs are trained to follow the trail left by the fox. 這些狗是經過訓練,能夠追踪狐狸留下的氣味。

Ben left a trail of muddy footprints behind him. Ben 在他的身後留下了泥濘的足印。

痕跡有些時候也挺廣泛,不一定是看得到的。例如:

The police admit that the robbers have left no trail for them to follow up. 警方承認小偷沒有留何蛛絲馬跡給他們追蹤。

用作動詞時,Trail 解作拖、拉或緩慢的拖行,例如:

Maria, your dress is trailing in the mud!

馬利亞,妳的裙子拖在泥濘裏呢!

After a long walk for 6 hours, they trailed back to the hotel. 大伙們步行了六小時後,拖着疲伐的脚步回去酒店。

所以Trail 是指疲憊或非常不願意的情況下拖行着脚步來行。

CNN 美國廣播電台大字標題形容英國哈里王子的婚禮為: A trailblazing wedding

意思是指今次哈里王子的婚禮模式是與以前皇室的婚禮不一樣,造成别人的模範。所以首創先河者又可被譯作trailblazer.

I am one of the trailblazers in explaining the English words used by editors.

我是其中一個在報刊上解釋編輯們的英語用字的先行者。
