Spike / spaɪk /

Verb or Noun 動詞或名詞

Spike 用作名詞時,是指那尖狀物的東西,例如我們經常看見那些房屋或圍牆上佈滿的尖刺,用來防止别人攀爬進去的東西,便是Spikes。

釘鞋鞋底的釘子,具防滑作用,這些釘子也被稱為Spikes。

Spike 在指某程度或數量上維持在一個很高的水平,也會被用作名詞來表達。美國CNN電台一則新聞報導有關美國總統特朗普的貿易政策時,指出︰

Trump’s tariffs have not led to marked spikes in US costs, but the government has had to step in to help certain farmers hurt by retaliation.

意思指特朗普的關税並未為美國帶來成本明顯的下降,反而美國政府需要插手去拯救那些遭其他國家報復而受到經濟損害的農民。

Spike 用作動詞時,有個不是很formal的用法是指不被報章刊登,例如︰

The story was deemed too controversial so they spiked it.

由於那故事太具爭議性,所以他們拒絕刊登。

用作動詞時,Spike亦可解作在食物或飲品裏添加某些强烈的味道,例如︰

Spiked her drink with whisky 在她的酒裏添加了威士忌

Cream sauce spiked with black pepper 在奶油醬裏加了黑胡椒

在排球比賽中的扣殺,也是Spike呢!
