支撑、提高、改善的意思。

在最近一篇政治評論談及美國總統特朗普在亞拉巴馬洲的報導，有提及：

Rather than kicking around the beleaguered establishment, Trump tried to shore it up.

意思即是特朗普嘗試支撑起來，為了不被閒置於一個混亂的局面。

因為若他不這樣做，會帶给他的總統領導地位一個嚴峻的考驗。

天鴿颱風帶來不少實質的破壞，有些歪倒的樹木或建築物需要用鐵或木柱支撑起來，我們會說：

The building has had to be shored up.

又或者有公司的形象被破壞了，公關經理需要改善。我們可以說：

The public relations manager has to shore up the company’s troubled image.

Shore something up 有其實質或意義上支撑的不同用法。
