十一月九日的雅虎財經英文版有一則關於英國房地產的報導：

UK housing market is grinding to a halt, report surveyors

Grinding to a halt 是一常見的成語，意思是慢慢停下來；逐漸陷入停顿。

可以是實質的停下來，例如：The car ground to a halt in the middle of the road. 汽車在路中央慢慢的停下來。

或是比喻性的，例如：

If we don’t do something soon, the business could grind to a halt anytime.

如果我們還不做一些工作，生意可能在任何時間馬上停頓。

Grind the faces of the poor 是另外一句成語，意思是欺壓平民或搜刮窮人財產。

片語Grind somebody down 的意思是指長期欺壓或欺凌某人

當Grind 用在名詞時，意思是指苦差，例如：

Having to tidy up the mess is really a grind.

要將這些混亂的一遍整理起來確實是苦差
