Spell 這個詞相信很多人在小學學英語時已認識，意思是把字母串讀出來。

例如 : It is important that children should be taught to spell. 兒童學懂怎樣串字是很重要的。

按路透社記者Elizabeth Piper 報導一則關於英國脫歐談判大臣David Davis 最近與歐盟談判的交待中，標題上說明 :

UK spells out Brexit transition demands as pressure mounts on May.

其中spells out 是一片語phrase verb. 意思是解釋清楚，詳細地說明。

標題的意思是英國詳細解釋脫歐的過渡要求，以減輕那些對英國首相Theresa May 的巨大壓力。

若果Spell 跟disaster, trouble 等字同用時，意思是造成。例如 : The coming cold weather could spell trouble for gardeners. 在到來的冷凍天氣好可能對園丁們造成麻煩。

美式英文中Spell 會解作代替他人去做某些事，待他人可作休息。例如: You have been driving for a while, do you want me to spell you? 意思是你已經駕駛了一段時間，你可需要我代替你來駕車？
